Academic Advice for Students Transferring from a Community College
The following requirements are important for all College of Liberal Arts' students. However, community college transfer students should be aware of expectations so as to ensure a smooth transition from your community college to the U of M-Twin Cities, College of Liberal Arts.
Academic requirements
Major Requirement
- You
should prepare for your major by taking pre-requisite or introductory
courses. However, it is not usually a good idea to complete a large
number of credits in your major. Many of the credits may not transfer
to the major, especially if your major only requires or allows one
lower-level (1xxx-2xxx) major course.
- Many
majors require that students complete at least half of all upper-level
(3xxx-5xxx) major credits at the U of M-Twin Cities. Take special note
if your major department has assigned certain community college courses
upper-level equivalents at the U of M. Most community college courses will transfer as 1xxx or 2xxx-level courses.

Second Language Requirement
Upper Division Requirement
- All students who graduate from the College of Liberal Arts must complete 48 upper level credits. In most cases, these courses cannot be completed at a community college. See CLA Course Transfer Guides for exceptions.
Policy requirements
13-credit requirement
- All students are required to take 13 credits each semester. Students can file a request for a reduced credit load once admitted to the U of M, CLA. However, unless you have life circumstances that restrict full-time enrollment at the U of M, expect to take at least 13 credits per semester.
