Community College Students
What you should know about... the Second Language Requirement
The
College of Liberal Arts requires all students who are pursuing a B.A.,
B.I.S. or B.F.A. in Art to complete the second language requirement. More than 90% of CLA students graduate with a B.A. For a list of majors and degrees, go to http://discovercla.umn.edu/careers/majors_a-z.htm
There
are a couple of ways to demonstrate proficiency. You can take a fourth
semester language course of at least four credits and pass it with a C-
or better, or an S, or you can take a proficiency test administered by the U of M.
If you plan to complete the requirement through coursework, one of two strategies is advised for community college students:
- Take
a first semester community college language course in preparation for
second semester study at the U of M. The Departments of French, German, and Spanish at the U of M all offer a second semester course aimed at
students who have completed a first semester course at a previous
institution (the courses are labeled Fren 1022, Ger 1022 and Span
1022). Students are also considered prepared for 1022 if they have
completed at least two years of high school language (within the last
five years). If you plan to complete the MnTC, this option might make the most sense.
- Complete the requirement by finishing a
fourth semester language course of at least four credits at a community college. Although
most students take four semesters of language coursework in college, if
you are continuing a language you learned in high school, you may not
need to start with the first semester course. Check with your community college for placement information for language courses. Remember, it is completion
of a fourth semester language course that will signify that you are
done with the requirement, not completion of four semesters of language. If you plan to complete the A.A. degree, this option might make the most sense.
Schedule Planning considerations
- If you do decide to take a second or third semester language course at a community college, understand that you will need to take a placement test before you are allowed to take either a third or fourth semester course at the U of M. Previous coursework will not act as a guide for placement!
- If you have taken coursework in a language other than French, German or Spanish, you will need to contact the appropriate department for placement information. It is not always the case that skills developed in a first semester course at another institution will correspond with what is learned in a first semester course at the U of M (for example, as can be the case with some Asian languages).
Exceptions to the Second Language requirement
- If
you are a native speaker of a language other than English, be sure to
talk to your CLA adviser once you are admitted to CLA. You may be exempt from the CLA second language
requirement. Students who are heritage speakers
(students who have been exposed to a language other than English at
home) are often not exempt from the Second Language requirement. You must be proficient in all areas of communication: speaking, listening, reading and writing.
- If you are pursuing a CLA degree other than the BA, BIS, BFA in Art (i.e., Bach. Music, BS, and other BFAs), you do not need to complete the Second Language requirement. However, you are still responsible for the High School Preparation Second Language Requirement. This means you need two years of a second language in high school, or
two semesters or three quarters of second language coursework in
college.

Courses that will transfer
For

Requirement, choose one of the following links. The lists will not be
comprehensive; if a school is not listed, the school may offer a course
that has not yet been assessed and evaluated by the appropriate
department.
