Second Language Requirement

All CLA students pursuing BA, BIS or BFA in Art degrees must satisfy the second language requirement. Approximately 90% of students who graduate from CLA graduate with a B.A. degree. There are two ways to satisfy this requirement.

  • The most common is through completion of coursework. You must complete a fourth-semester or sixth-quarter, four credit college-level course with a grade of C- or better, or an S.
  • You can take and pass the Language Proficiency Exam (LPE). The LPE tests speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills at the fourth- semester/sixth-quarter level and is available once you are admitted to the University of Minnesota. The LPE is not available for all languages, however. Click here for a list of languages offered at the University of Minnesota, and for languages for which the LPE is offered.
Exceptions
  • If you are a native speaker of a language other than English, be sure to talk to your CLA adviser once you are admitted to CLA. You may be exempt from the CLA second language requirement. Students who are heritage speakers (students who have been exposed to a language other than English at home) are often not exempt from the Second Language requirement. You must be proficient in all areas of communication: speaking, listening, reading and writing.
  • If you are pursuing a CLA degree other than the BA, BIS, BFA in Art (i.e., Bach. Music, BS, and other BFAs), you do not need to complete the Second Language requirement. However, you are still responsible for the High School Preparation Second Language Requirement. This means you need two years of a second language in high school, or two semesters or three quarters of second language coursework in college.
