Information for students transferring from a coordinate campus (UMD, UMM, UMC)
If you are a student who plans to transfer from a coordinate campus, there are several things you should know before you apply to the U of M-Twin Cities, College of Liberal Arts.
- You must complete a minimum of 30 credits of U of M-Twin Cities campus coursework to earn a degree from the U of M-Twin Cities.
- If
you are completing a BA, BIS, or BFA in Art, you must complete the
second language requirement as outlined by UMN-Twin Cities' College of Liberal Arts. The CLA second
language requirement requires students to achieve proficiency at a fourth-semester, not a second-semester, level. Read more on the Second Language requirement.
- You will likely need to complete at least half of your upper-level (3xxx-5xxx) major credits on the U of M-Twin
Cities campus. For example, if your major requires 30 credits of
upper-level coursework, at least 15 of those credits will likely need to be completed on this
campus. Consult with the appropriate major department for more information on the departmental residency requirement.
- If you have completed all of the Liberal Education
requirements-- or more specifically, the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum
(MnTC) which requires that you complete at least 40 credits of coursework and
fulfill all Liberal Education requirement categories-- you must have completion of the MnTC certified and posted by the registrar on the campus from which you are transferring. Specific courses that fulfill Liberal Education requirements do not necessary coincide from campus to campus. Consult with your UMC, UMD, or UMM adviser for more information about the MnTC and posting of such on your transcript.
Applying to CLA
To apply to CLA, you must fill out a "change of college" form. The minimum GPA required for students transferring from a coordinate campus is a 2.5. However, understand that depending on the competitiveness of an applicant pool, the actual GPA minimum might be higher.
There are three majors that require specific GPA minimums and/or an additional application process for entry into the major. These are:
