Major Declaration, Change of College and Dual Degree Information

For U of M-Twin Cities, Non-CLA Students

Earning a CLA major/minor

For more information on declaring a major or minor in CLA, contact the appropriate department. Students must file a major or minor program form with the CLA Student Information Office, 49 Johnston Hall, for the major/minor to be posted to your record. Some major declaration forms are filed online; the department you are working with will advise you as to appropriate filing procedure. Some CLA majors/minors require an audition (e.g. Music), some majors require a formal application (e.g. Journalism), while others require that a student complete certain pre-requisites before declaring the major or minor.

Note that non-CLA students who graduate from a non-CLA college with a CLA major are not allowed to later complete a CLA degree with the same major.

Earning a CLA degree

Students enrolled in other U of M-TC colleges who wish to complete a CLA degree must fill out the "Application for Undergraduate Change of College" or an "Application for Admission to Second Undergraduate Degree Program" by published deadlines.

The "Application for Undergraduate Change of College" is appropriate for students who wish to no longer pursue the major/degree in their current college.

The "Application for Admission to Second Undergraduate Degree Program" is appropriate for students who wish to pursue degrees from different colleges simultaneously.

Please go to
One Stop's Changing Major or College site for the appropriate forms.

Note:
College of Liberal Arts degree programs include some requirements that students' first colleges may not. Students who plan to earn a CLA degree in addition to their first degree must meet all CLA degree requirements, and the second degree must be a different major field than the first degree (for example, if a student has earned a BS in Chemistry from IT, the same student may not also earn a BA in Chemistry from CLA). In addition to the CLA major requirements, liberal education core and themes, and the writing requirement, students must also meet the following requirements:
  • CLA Second Language requirement: pass the Language Proficiency Exam (LPE) that certifies language proficiency at the fourth semester level or higher, or pass a fourth semester language course with a C- or better, or S. All fourth semester (or sixth quarter) language courses from transfer institutions must be at least 4 credits. A student whose native language is not English may be exempt from this requirement. Also note that students pursuing BA, BIS, and BFA in Art are requied to complete the CLA second language requirement. Consult with a transfer adviser if you have any questions about this requirement.

  • Upper Level Writing Intensive: At least one of the two required 3/4/5xxx (upper) level Writing Intensive courses must be in the CLA major.

  • Upper level credits: at least 48 credits must be in upper level courses. This will include CLA major courses at the upper level, and for the BA degree will also include at least 18 credits at the upper level outside the major.

    • Students completing an established interdepartmental major, or a B.F.A, B.I.S, or B.S. degree are exempt from the 18 credits outside of the major requirement

  • Major Project:  All CLA BA degrees require a major project. You are required to complete a project acceptable in your CLA major even if you are completing a senior project in your first degree.
For complete information and FAQ on dual degree completion, please print out the "Completing Dual Degrees at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities" form (found in pdf format).
