Transfer Ambassador Program This program provides you with an opportunity to meet one-on-one with a member of TSAB - someone who has gone through the transfer process. A Transfer Ambassador can tailor the meeting to your questions or needs. You can choose to take a campus tour (an offering especially helpful for prospective students), meet to talk, or just email a question or two.

Ambassador Bios Marie Gabrielson
In 2005 I transferred from the University of Washington-Seattle. I stay busy working full time here at the U of M and of course, being a student. I am majoring in Human Resources with a theme in public health/affairs, after a fifth and hopefully final major change. My favorite thing by far is traveling around the world (if only it were free)! I volunteer for the Courage Center and also enjoy downhill skiing, tennis and attending the concerts of new and unique artists. If you know of any good shows please shoot them my way! My best advice to new transfer students is - try your best to get involved in some sort of group or program at the U; it's a great way to find your place in such a large metropolitan area. I transferred from Anoka-Ramsey Community College in Coon Rapids, MN in
the fall semester of 2005. I am finally a senior majoring in Print Journalism and hope to write for some newspaper after graduation. I am 26 and people find it hard to believe that I am as old as I tell them, I must look young, but that's ok. I like it. I transferred to the U because after attending community college for three years, I felt it was time to move up to a bigger university to finish my degree and have the full college experience. I love how the U is so close to downtown Minneapolis. I think that it is hard for
transfer
students to meet other people at the U. I believe that it is important
to join student groups that meet your interests as a way to meet
students. College is a great place to further your eduction and meet
some great people. Contact Kelly at gulbr042@umn.edu.
Kate Johnson
In spring of 2008, I transferred to the University of Minnesota
from Luther College. I am majoring in art and plan
on enrolling in the U of M College of Design to obtain a degree in graphic
arts. I plan to graduate from CLA in fall of 2009. My career aspiration is a job in design or advertising.
What helped me adjust was connecting with a fellow transfer student. We
discovered the workings of campus together. It is important to get involved on
campus; finding a club you are interested in is a great way to meet people.
People are willing to answer questions or help out, so do not be afraid to ask. Contact Kate at joh01728@umn.edu
Amanda Klawiter
I am a transfer student from Anoka-Ramsey Community College, and I am an Honors Psychology major in my junior year. I plan on going abroad to London this coming summer. I am debating on minoring in Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature. I am an Officer for the Commuter Connections, and one thing that I realize is that the majority of transfer students are also commuters. I plan on going straight to graduate school, but to where I am not certain yet.
When I first transferred here I completely felt out of place, because after going to a small community college you get this sense of knowing everyone, even if it is just by face. There is a comfort in knowing who you are around. One of my immediate suggestions to any new transfer student is to seek out a few groups whose interests are similar to yours, because once you establish that sense of knowing people here it gets easier. After you get to know a few different clubs/groups then you will be able to decide which one you want to fully participate in. However, I don’t suggest spreading yourself so thin in so many activities that you lose the reason for finding a group. Connect with people on more of a personal level. Janae Olinger
I transferred to the U of M from Southwest Minnesota State University in the middle of my freshman year. I decided that a bigger college in a city was what I wanted, and the U of M has that, along with many other great factors. I am a psychology major, and am looking into being a Cultural Studies minor. I love music, movies and definitely traveling, and am planning on studying abroad at some point in my college years. I know that being a transfer student may be hard at first, but finding a great group to get involved with and friends to help you around definitely can help. Contact Janae at oling026@umn.edu

Alissa Peterson
Alissa is graduating from the U of M this term. She is graduating with a major in
Communication Studies with a minor in Psychology. She spent her freshman year
at University of Minnesota, Duluth (UMD) but did not feel comfortable
there. "I did not like how it was all tunneled inside and that you
needed a car to get anywhere off campus. Those are the two things
I love the most about the U: I get to walk outside and everything
is relatively close even if you're off campus. I love music:
to play it, listen to it, and attend live concerts. My most
favorite activity ever is to be at my cabin in Annandale, MN enjoying
the water and the weather."
